CADAQUÉS (8h)

Cadaqués is a pintoresc village located in the Costa Brava, one of the most beautiful coasts in the Mediterranean. It is around 2.5h from Barcelona.

The history of Cadaqués goes back centuries and has been influenced by a number of civilisations, such as those of Greece and Rome. Maritime connections and trade agreements with these and other cultures fostered local economic development, based mainly on fishing and agriculture. The geographical setting of Cadaqués, as a coastal town cut off from the rest of the Alt Emporda region by the Pení Mountain, undoubtedly had a strong influence on establis- hing the seafaring identity and spirit of this town, which had to weather attacks from pirates and buccaneers over the centuries. As time went on, the Mediterranean Sea gradually became less fraught with danger, which led to the town’s growth, paving the way for industry, trade and the opening of international shipping routes. Nowadays, the town’s principal economic focus is on tourism, an activity which influences all its sectors in some shape or form, either directly or indirectly.

The centre of Cadaqués offers a wide selection of cultural possibilities that include the old, walled medieval town where visitors can walk the town’s ancientslate’Rastell’pavement. The church of Sta.Maria de Cadaqués,built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and largely reflecting the style of the late Gothic period, houses a splendid gilded 23-metre-high Baroque altarpiece dedicated to Our Lady of Hope. The work was designed by Jacint Moretó and created by sculptors Pau Costa and Joan Torres.
